Professional Experience:
While in school earning my Master's degree in the late 1980s, I interned at UC Davis Medical Center, Out
Patient Psychiatry and later at The Family Service Agency. At both places I provided individual, couples,
family, and group therapy to people struggling with anything from severe psychiatric issues to more mild
life challenges. I also participated in developing an intensive outpatient Bulimic Program focusing on
individuals and families struggling with eating disorders.
After completing my education, I worked at Child and Family Institute providing therapy for children and
families affected by sexual abuse. I also worked with at risk youths and their families at New Morning
Youth Services.
Because I was fortunate to be able to stay home to raise my children, I took a leave of absence for several
years. More recently, I have returned to work providing counseling to at-risk adolescents at Kinney High
School.
I have provided direct service, education, and training to adolescents and their families with special
sensitivity to multicultural populations. My treatment specialties include working with children and
adolescents along with their families struggling with addictions, eating disorders, sexual abuse
victimization, trauma, and PTSD. Additional areas of special training include depressions/anxiety,
bereavement issues along with other areas of interpersonal challenges and struggles.
As a Therapist:
I use cognitive and behavioral interventions when appropriate to assist my clients to develop practical
skills and move through their challenging life transitions. Furthermore, I am very familiar with the Twelve
Step Recovery Programs.
Seeking therapy is an individual’s choice. There are many reasons why people come to therapy.
Sometimes it is to deal with long standing psychological issues, or problems. Other times it is just in
response to unexpected changes in one’s life. Therapy can address many different issues including
anxiety, depression, stress management and general life transitions.
On a Personal Level:
First and most importantly, I really love what I do, and respect and value the clients who chose to work
with me. I have been married since 1985, and have raised two children. So, along with my work experience
and educational background, I have life skills to help guide my work. I offer a highly personalized
approach tailored to the client’s individual needs. This focused attention helps each individual attain the
personal growth for which one strives.
As an Associate Clinical; Social Worker, I am working toward earning my required hours to become a Licensed Clinical
Social Worker. As mandated by the Board of Behavioral science, I work closely under the supervision of a Licensed
Clinician. This licensed person is Mary Guzik LCSW, LCS 25297.
